    Charles Bukowski
was a German-born American poet, novelist, and short story writer, whose
writing was influenced by the social, cultural, and economic ambiance of his home city of
    Los Angeles, and whose
work addresses the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the working class,
    alcohol
, relationships with women, and the underbelly of U.S. American life. Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over 60 books. The
    FBI
kept a file on him as a result of his column,
Notes of a Dirty Old Man
, in the LA underground newspaper
    Open City
    . He
published extensively in small presses from the early 1940s and through the early 1990s. He was a leading literary underground figure, always with loyalty to those small press editors who had first championed his work
    .
Some of these works include his
Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 Story Window
, published by his friend and fellow poet
    Charles Potts
    , and
Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame,
works of poems and stories later republished by
    John Martin's Black Sparrow Press
    .
    Other works include
    Flower, Fist, and Bestial Wail
    , Factotum,
    Ham on Rye
    , Post Office,
Love is a Dog from Hell
, The Days Run Away Like Horses Over the Hill,
    Bone Palace Ballet
, South of No North, Tales of Ordinary Madness,
Erections, Ejaculations, Exhibitions, and General Tales of Madness
, and others.... Bukowski has influenced not only literature, but also film and music, including recording artists Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, and The Book of Knots.
