Al Capone’s Booze Bottles & Weapon Collection From His Hide out in Upstate NY
What could be more fun than popping a cork and having a drink from Big Al’s private stash? Perhaps owning the knife used to intimidate a man about to be scalped to play ball? Or maybe the skull crusher hatchet to eliminate the uncooperative witness before the court date?  The 3 in one oil bottle for maintaining his famous firearms, or the carbide lamp used while digging the island tunnel to hide his loot? Let your imagination run wild with the possibilities. After a years worth of research tracking the life of Al Capone, his island hide out was finally discovered in 1969. This 50 year old private recovery represents a once in a lifetime historical and collectible find.
A private archaeology dive team was established to investigate several promising areas. Hidden deep in an Adirondack mountain glacier lakes in upstate New York. Deep under the cold water near his hide out some very interesting treasures in the form of rare old bottles, possible murder weapons, and personal artifacts were discovered. After all, Nobody just throws usable weapons, money, or good tools away unless they want to avoid future prosecution, right? Be aware that Archaeology dive teams, salvage teams, and treasure hunters have a lot in common.
Unlike the gangsters today, in years gone bye organized criminals were very serious. They were wide spread, sophisticated, and not so different from the drug lords of today. “Big Al” was a very politically connected ruthless criminal. His talent was to fund elections, install judges, and persuaded like thinking “greedy progressive democrats” into government offices and departments. Bribing judges, prosecutors, and Police only represented the visible portion of the organization. Having powerful corrupted “friends in high places” that “owe you a favor” made him money, and protected him from the law.
High profile criminals and cohorts needed a secluded hide out where they can lay low as the police were constantly hunting them. The greatest American gangsters personal collection of medications, and liquors tells you a great deal about how Big Al lived his life when hunkered down. Back in the mid 1960’s a criminal researcher wanted to know how Al Capone lived, as a rich and famous mobster. Interviews with the prison guards provided valuable information. After his secret location was eventually discovered, the next step was to explore it. Many hours were invested in research before any diving expedition. After Al Capone died this valuable island property was confiscated by the state of NY, we assume for unpaid taxes. This made ground digs around the camp area impossible. We suspected that historically valuable items including the gun collection and any cash hidden away in the elaborate cabin home were stolen or confiscated by the police and state employees after the raid of the property. This isolated part of northern upstate NY has always been a favorite place for the many crime families to pay respect, and donate massive political contributions from New York City, even to this day.
One of the most interesting facts about living on such a remote lake was how they disposed of their trash starting in 1700’s. It was common to gather those items that could not be burned into baskets and then take them out by boat weekly into deep water and dump them. (An unhealthy practice still utilized in the world's oceans for radioactive waste) In the case of Al Capone’s dwelling, many of the liquor bottles were used as target practice to fight the boredom when in hiding. Therefore, very few bottles remained intact. In such a remote locations shooting guns, or getting rid of bodies after a ride in the get a way cars trunk was never a problem. Hence the reply for missing people: “He might be swimming with the fishes”. This isolated location was only used during the summer, near the horse tracks, and early fall because the Adirondack winters can be so severe making all forms of transportation impossible.
The scouting diving portion of the expedition was hazardous, with depths over 100 ft, cold, dark with very limited visibility. The moving glaciers that created these lakes moved massive amounts of dirt, mud, sand. The freezing and thawing cycle made the lake bottom conditions difficult to search. Over 80 years of silt several feet thick securely entombed most artifacts making professional metal detectors necessary to plot the search areas. Luckily, the gangsters typically used wooden apple baskets with steel wire reinforcements to transport their trash offshore to the dumping area. The beauty of the thick silt, mud layer and cold temperatures is why the artifacts were preserved in excellent condition as you can see from the pictures, especially considering the age. Some early bottles recovered appear hand made from wooden molds from the early 1800’s to the early 1940’s. Unfortunately few perfect unbroken bottles were recovered, unlike the typical musket balls and canon balls from the French & Indian wars recovered in the Lake George region of the state.
Note:
Treasure hunting: is extremely time consuming, high risk, and an expensive undertaking, and nobody wants to work for free! Unless you have a reality show or History channel documentary program contract to cover your expenses it is seldom worth while.  One of the problems all treasure hunters and recovery teams face is that if you are fortunate enough to actually find something of value, (the vast majority do not) there is usually an army of attorneys representing the original owner, an insurance company who paid for a loss claim, and state, federal, international obscure tax authorities claiming rights, and IRS ready to confiscate the treasure. This is why the majority of valuable finds are never reported and forever kept secret! Everything from rare historical artifacts from South America, or a shipwreck full of gold or emeralds are seldom ever reintroduced back into the USA, England, Spain, or Italy, these items of value are typically sold within the black market to collectors.  This historical find are among the rarest Al Capone items to date.
